Good morning.
Happy Thanksgiving to those who will be
celebrating it this coming week. It’s a
much needed long weekend for many, to be
followed by the famous Black Friday sales.
They will be different this year.
People aren’t going to stores and malls
much lately, are they?
And many online stores have already started
Black Friday specials long in advance, not
just Amazon.
Black Friday used to be special. I remember
my son and his wife would plan in advance,
charting their stops, and get up early in
order to hit each store when it opened,
leaving their house maybe around 3 or 4 a.m.
By mid-afternoon they usually had all
of their holiday shopping done, and
my son would start setting up the outdoor
Christmas decorations proudly.
Those were good times.
And then stores started doing the sales
on Thursday instead of Friday, so when
they came to our house for the traditional
dinner, they had to leave early rather
than sticking around for a while to play
board games.
Now Black Friday is pretty much in
name only, and anti-climactic, because
so many online stores start selling so
very early.
What is traditional is the holiday and
the food and giving thanks…
… except there won’t be as many people
to share those dinner tables with this
year, will there?
Because of indoor gathering rules for one
thing, and because so many have passed
away this year, way too young in many
cases.
‘Tis a shame.
I’m thankful for many things this year,
and not so happy about others, obviously.
But it is what it is, and this too shall
pass, and when normalcy returns, we’ll
see what normal looks like then.
Enjoy your week, and count your blessings.
